I Am Because You Are September 5, 2025 Devotional

JOHN 6:28-29, 40 | 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

40 This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day.

 

Jesus claims to be the unique God-given route to unending divine life. There are many ways to validate a claim, to test an assertion. But this unique claim of His receives a unique existential validation.
You and I must begin to follow and to trust and then to see the    results. Do our relationships with others change? Do we experience a new sense of adventure? Does a hope grow? Do we have a       greater heart for the world’s problems? A stronger patience with others? Does our understanding of ourselves evolve, along with our longing to be made new? Are we drawn to help and serve more than conquer and triumph? Jesus is the road to transcendence and transformation.

 

The test of Jesus’ claims begins with answering His invitation—come and follow me. Do you agree?

 

Gracious God,

Some truths are experimental and existential. Give me the courage to answer Your invitation and to connect my life to Yours.

Amen.

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
