I Am Because You Are September 7, 2025 Devotional

JOHN 8:12 | ¹²Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

1 JOHN 1:5 | ⁵ This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.

This week we look at Jesus’ claim to be the light of the cosmos. What could validate such a claim?

One very suggestive supportive element is the absence of any darkness in His life and character. Other great figures of history, like each of us, struggled with their own deficiencies and temptations. Some, like King David, gave in to desire and broke moral laws. Some resisted and resented God’s agenda, like Jonah. Others were ruled by ambition, like James and John who sought positions of glory and authority in Jesus’ kingdom. Materialism, greed, egoism, selfishness, gluttony—the list of issues is long and telling. But as we examine Jesus’ life, we marvel at His honesty and pursuit of truth, His           humility and desire to serve, His love even for enemies. His life shone like no other, for in Him there was no darkness at all.

Gracious God,

You were tempted in every way, as we are, in the person of Your Son—yet He lived in the light and obeyed divine truth and love’s dictates to the end. Hallelujah!
