PSALM 119:105 | 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
We have a saying in English, "to be in the dark" about something. It means to be unaware, to be ignorant, to be clueless and unknowing. In Plato's Republic book VII there is an allegory called “The Cave.” Imprisoned cave dwellers can only see shadows of human figures projected on their walls by a flickering firelight.
A prisoner escapes, sees the form of these figures in the light of the sun, and returns to the cave with an enhanced view of reality. This idea of knowledge as a process of enlightenment has greatly influenced Western culture. To be enlightened is to understand things as they truly are, to have a knowledge that is both accurate and comprehensive, true and profound.
A second proof Jesus is the light of the cosmos is that His teachings about God and human life provide crucial moral and psychological insight of an enduring kind. His take on servanthood, or on speech, or on love, or on self-denial, or on the nature of God, brings more light and understanding than any other, previous or subsequent.
Are Jesus' words a lamp to your feet and light to your path?
Gracious God,
Your divine light is brighter than the sun. Your clarity of perception unclouded by prejudice or need. Thank You for the truth You share with us. Help us live by it.
Amen.
