LUKE 1:46-50 | 46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on the lowly state of his servant. Surely from now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name; 50 indeed, his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
Mary’s yes to God’s plan was very brave, given the danger and uncertainty. She retreated to the hill country during her pregnancy to live with her older relative Elizabeth, who was pregnant with the forerunner who we know as John the Baptist. Notice her unbridled enthusiasm and joy at the task of bearing the Messiah. Her natural fear has given way to holy awe. She anticipates future generations celebrating with her and enunciates a startling principle and a reason for hope—God elevates the humble who respect Him, showing His favor and His mercy. Her humility, her lowly social status, her youth and inexperience, are not barriers to His purpose if she has faith and trust in the “Mighty One”—they are instead, qualifications for her role in His work.
Make Mary’s song your own and magnify the Lord your Savior.
Gracious God,
You equip those You call. Thank You that the best thing we can bring to Your service is humility and faith in Your power and plan.
Amen.
