Jesus' Family Album December 13 Devotional

LUKE 1:54 | 54He has come to the aid of his child Israel, in remembrance of his mercy.

 

The story of God lifting the humble and working through the lowly is soon to be Mary’s story. A humble couple from a town so obscure it was only recently located by archeologists became the “holy family.” In this verse, Mary reminds us that her story is also Israel’s story. Her nation is also small and insignificant among the larger nations and empires of the world. It’s power is minimal among the greater states and it has often been a vassal, subject to the will of foreign kings.

 

Yet God has revealed His will and ways, through law and prophets, through miracles and moments of revelation. The cultural and historical influence of this tiny people is gigantic and will grow bigger through the coming Messiah.

 

God often works beneath the headlines. When has He been at work in a hidden way in your life?

 

 

Gracious God,

Thank You for Israel, for the Torah, for the prophets, for the amazing story of this nation’s emergence and survival, and great legacy.

Amen.

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
