LUKE 1:55 | 55according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.
Young Mary functions as a prophet in these verses we’ve been studying, which are usually called the Magnificat, or sometimes Mary’s song. Prophets are often thought of as foretellers, who make predictions about future events, like soothsayers of old or carnival figures with crystal balls. But in the Bible, prophets are truth tellers, who discern through the Spirit how God is at work now and how His actions connect to His promises.
Mary shows us a powerful practice in this verse. She locates her life within the bigger story of God’s activity. His promise to her concerning the Messiah fulfills the ancient promise to Abraham. And through Jesus, Abraham’s decedents would indeed become as numerous as the stars in the sky.
Do you locate your life within the story of God’s redeeming grace and glorious kingdom?
Gracious God,
Help me see my small story as part of Your larger one. Fulfill Your promises through me.
Amen.
