MATTHEW 1:6b | 6b And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah.
A fourth woman appears in the genealogy of the Messiah, this one so scandalous, her name is indicated but not mentioned. It is of course, Bathsheba. It is a stark reminder that the Messiah’s own family needs saving, as do all broken and wounded human beings. David, the man after God’s heart, Psalm singer, and Israel’s greatest king, made the evil decision to seduce Bathsheba and to have her husband Uriah killed. The murder disguised as an innocent military death, thus involving others in the conspiracy. The shepherd of the sheep becomes a wolf to satisfy his desires, breaking at least four of the Ten Commandments: against murder, envy, adultery, and false witness. Solomon is the second child of Bathsheba and David, the initial one dying after birth.
The line between the righteous and the unrighteous runs down the middle of very human heart. Do you agree?
Gracious God,
The Messiah came to save sinners and even the most distinguished human beings fall squarely in that category. Thank You for Your mercy, Lord.
Amen.
