EXODUS 3:14-15 | 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” He said further, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” 15 God also said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’: This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations.
The problem of describing our “God moments” is only finally resolvable when others encounter God for themselves. The escape from Egypt was followed by worship on the mountain. Part of the problem we discover trying to describe our religious experiences is rooted in the divine nature. God’s mysterious name “I am who I am” or “I will be who I will be” represents this in our passage. God is beyond description or definition. He is unique and self-sufficient, creator not creature, and this means we are incapable of fathoming His inner life—unless He reveals it.
The verses today also emphasize the reality of His self-revelation. He decided to make friends and build relationships with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses’ encounter is not sui generis, it is part of an ongoing story, a divine plan. We can describe the mysterious God in a concrete and clear way because He has acted in history and His deeds and relationships reveal His nature.
Can you describe God in terms of His deeds in your life?
