EXODUS 2:13-14a | 13 When he went out the next day, he saw two Hebrews fighting, and he said to the one who was in the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow Hebrew?” 14a He answered, “Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?
The choice of teammates or shipmates or colleagues or ministry partners is vital and soul shaping. Some people have commitment issues, they are looking for a perfect team, a perfect crew, a perfect firm, a perfect church. They remain as individuals and don’t opt into enterprises and organizations. Pandemic work from home has enhanced the trend toward solitary lifestyles.
But we were born and designed for relationships. Western ideas of “autonomous individuals,” fly in the face of a great deal of history and biology. Life satisfaction and soul balance and ego health all depend on the character and quality of our community experiences. We are not locked into a frozen identity because of our race or background, empathy and imagination can help us understand and connect in many ways. Notice that Moses’ choice of his Hebrew identity would mean tough adjustment. Hebrew slaves don’t suddenly accept royal Egyptian sons as brothers and leaders.
How has community shaped you?
Do you define yourself relationally?
