Leading With a Generous Heart: Day 2
Have you ever gone “the second mile?” How did the other party react to your underserved generosity?

Some injustices must be directly resisted or protested. Jesus’ “extra mile tactic” is not applicable in every situation. But responding to casual exploitation with gracious help, was actually a novel way of escaping Roman social control. By helping the soldier freely, on his own terms, the Jewish person demonstrated that sanctioned oppression was not able to dictate a response. The freedom from anger and freedom from resentment shows an allegiance to a power greater than Rome, to a Lordship that is loving and human.
Imagine the shock of a Roman soldier when someone smiles and goes for a second or third mile. This kind of response breaks out of the quid pro quo world and creates a window into the kingdom of grace and mercy.
