Marked Devotional 33

LUKE 19:43-44a | 43 Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side. 44a They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another...
A third reason Jesus wept, revealing God’s compassion, was the consequences that Israel would face from rejecting Him as Messiah. By saying no to a Messiah of peace and reconciliation and enemy love, Jewish leaders strengthened the zealot option. They refused to extend their understanding of their mission and God’s work beyond their own borders. This refusal left a more violent nationalism as the other possibility. Jesus knew this would bring down upon Israel a devastating response. He describes in a brief way, the destruction of Jerusalem in these verses. In 70AD, this devastation did indeed occur.
Have you ever seen revolutionary zeal lead to devastating consequences?
Take a look at Mark 13:1-2, and 14-23 for a fuller description of the havoc He saw coming.
