New? February 7 Devotional

2 PETER 3:11-12 | 11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire?

Peter has completely reframed the scoffers’ viewpoint. They see the delay of Jesus’ return as a reason for skepticism, and he sees it as an opportunity for service and witness. They think life is unchanged, he knows we can experience eternity within time, the kingdom of God within human history. His assurance of the Return gives him motivation to prepare for a reckoning and to live in a way that honors God and pleases our King and judge. The scoffers see tragedy and evil proceeding as always and don’t trust the promises. Peter stands on scripture and the words of Jesus and believes in the triumph of truth and justice over death and evil.

Has your sense of the importance of Christian belief in the Return grown?

Gracious God,

Like Peter, help me find assurance and motivation in my conviction concerning your return. May history’s final moments find me joyous and prepared.

Amen.
