New? February 8 Devotional

2 PETER 3:13-14, 18 | 13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. 14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

REVELATION 21:1, 4-5 | 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’ 5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’

The greatest benefit of our belief in the Return of Christ is our cosmic hope. The bible does not teach that we will be “beamed up” to somewhere unknown called heaven. It teaches that the entire cosmos will be brought to a stage of perfection. Cosmic renewal will mean an end to death and tragedy, and the defeat of every form of evil that has destroyed and diminished life. Peace will characterize all relationships and incomplete understanding of life’s mysteries, personal and natural, will give way to complete understanding. Beauty, truth, and love will exist in us and our restored world in a full and wondrous way. Joy will have no limits. Now that is a hope worth having!

Meditate on what it means to look forward to a “new heaven and earth.”

Gracious God,

Let my hope in you extend to every part of my life and all my relationships, lifting burdens and relieving anxiety. Come Lord Jesus!

Amen.
