New? January 18 Devotional

2 PETER 1:10-11 | 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble. 11 For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

Assurance within Roman Catholicism is based on participation in the liturgical rituals of confession and the mass. Luther made faith more subjective, insisting that it was a matter of individuals and their status before God. Justification by faith alone, apart from meritorious works, liturgical or otherwise, made assurance less clear. How do we know we’ve been justified? The answer for most Protestant groups is contained in verse 10: you confirm your call and your election. This confirmation comes by way of changed lives and fruitful endeavors for God that affirm our faith in his justifying grace and assure us of his spirit’s work in and through us.

Do you have assurance?

Gracious God,

We want to work at our salvation with fear and trembling, knowing you are at work in us and will bring that work to completion when you return. Confirm our call today as we serve and follow you.

Amen.
