New? January 21 Devotional

2 PETER 1:13 | 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to refresh your memory,

Physical death is an uncertain certainty. It is certain that it will come, but uncertain when or in what way. Whenever and however it occurs, death puts a limit on our earthly service, our contributions to the human story and God’s Kingdom. Since life is short and eternity is long, there should be a holy urgency to our relationships. We want to bless and encourage others while we can, while the light shines, because the darkness is coming. Peter has this sense of urgency and it can be felt in this verse. In my experience, at the end of their lives, most people regret things not said and things not done more than things said and done. Peter is measuring his life not by its span, but by its impact on others.

Have you reckoned with the “uncertain certainty?”

Gracious God,

Life with you lasts forever, but our earthly sojourn is short. Help us to measure our lives the right way and to cultivate a holy urgency.

Amen.
