New? January 30 Devotional

by David Joynt on January 30, 2025

2 PETER 1:18 | 18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.

Peter and the first disciples belong in a special category of witnesses, irreplaceable and paramount. Subsequent generations of followers cannot escape their dependence on the original ones. They had direct access to Jesus’ life, teaching, miracles, death, Resurrection, and Ascension, and to the arrival of his spirit at Pentecost. Those to who Peter writes, still in the first century, were also dependent in this same way. Yet now across 100 generations, 2000 years, men and women in hundreds of countries and thousands of cultures have received their testimony and authenticated it in their own lives and experiences.

Are you grateful for the consensus fidelium, the consensus of the faithful?

Gracious God,

Thank you for the original witnesses. Ordinary people who saw extraordinary things. Thank you for their honesty and also for the subsequent generations who have come to know you through their words and memories.

Amen.
