Pray Without Ceasing, Week 9, Day 59
by David Joynt on July 30, 2019
PSALM 1:2 | But their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.
PSALM 34:1-8 | I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him.
Do you delight in God’s law? Delight happens when we experience joy or connection to others. Delight brings a sparkle to our eyes and smiles to our faces. Delight concentrates our minds on the true, our spirits on the holy, our hearts on the beautiful. In this passage, law means more than commands, it is Torah, all of God’s communication to us in sacred story and song and poetry and event. I delight in scripture as a deep puzzle which I must work out. I delight in its simple truths also, its reminders that bring me back to basic realities. I delight in its marvelous interconnections of theme and image and its progressive picture of God’s character. I delight in its odd and human characters in all their goodness and brokenness. I delight in being addressed.
What delights you in scripture?
