WEEK 4
DAY 22
Can I Be a Follower without Being a Fundamentalist?
I am not a fundamentalist, but I believe with complete conviction, in the divine inspiration and authority of the Bible. It is possible, and indeed necessary, in the world we live in, to be an authentic follower of Jesus without being a fundamentalist.
Fundamentalism arises from a fear that the power of scripture as revelation, a word from God, will be lost either under the pressure of historical criticism that undermines its authority or under the pressure of disagreement, which undermines its clarity. Both of these fears, though understandable, create a defensive attitude toward understanding the Bible that does not fit with the character or content of God’s actual revelation.
Perfect love, for God and his word, casts out fear!
Have you ever encountered Christian fundamentalism?
What were your impressions?
