DAY 13 FRIDAY
MATTHEW 7:21-23
In some theological perspectives, the exercise of spiritual power is the sign par excellence of the Spirit’s work. Spectacular moments, when God does special signs and wonders, become the focus of the Christian life. Healing power, words of knowledge, prophetic inspiration and other wonderful manifestations are celebrated. Now it is true that all of these things should build our enthusiasm and elicit our praise, providing reassurance that God is active and alive. I treasure moments when I have seen the marvelous and the miraculous. But our passage today also reminds us that power, in itself, is not always a sign of connection with Jesus. If we focus only on the “great moments,” we miss the amazing work God does to touch, bless, encourage, and transform. Much of life with God is unspectacular but no less real or important. The loving person, the gracious person, the generous person, the just person, the loving person, are no less faithful or important than the wonder-worker.
What do you make of this surprising passage, when people who name Jesus as Lord and do wonders in his name are not “known” by him?
FAMILY TIME— Do you know anyone that is powerful? How can you tell? When do we know God is directing our own power?
