JAMES 1:19 | 19 You must understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.
Why is following this advise so crucial? Because “being quick to listen” lets us understand someone’s feelings and perspective. Then we can customize our response in turn. Further, our listening to them deepens their receptivity to us.
Because slower speech is gentler and more easily heard, and by expressing ourselves this way, we increase our own clarity and reduce the instances of misunderstanding and resentment.
Because anger inhibits clear thinking, clear expressing, and clear perception of another’s view. It produces one of the four reactions to anger expressed tomorrow (that is your teaser for Monday’s devotional). Anger causes us to be defensive and reactive rather than thoughtful and considerate.
