Set Apart Devotional June 17

by David Joynt on June 17, 2024

LEVITICUS 8:22-23 |  22 Then he brought forward the second ram, the ram of ordination. Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, 23 and it was slaughtered. Moses took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.

JOHN 13:6-9 | He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will        understand.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”

Some of our duties are compartmental. We have a role to play on a team, an organization, an activity. The role may be important but it does not carry over into the rest of our lives. Not so when we serve God. This moment in the ordination indicates the way our entire selves must be dedicated to His purposes. Moses takes some of the blood from the ordination ram and places it on Aaron’s right ear, right thumb, and right big toe. This ritually cleanses and dedicates his hearing and speaking, his holding and doing, and his pathways and movements to God. He does not act as a priest only when he wears the ephod and offers the sacrifices, he becomes a priest whatever he is doing. Jesus’ washing also must be complete and not partial!

Is service core to your identity?

Gracious God,

Cleanse me from head to foot, thoughts and deeds and movements. As I serve You today, help me to become a servant in a deeper way.

Amen.
