Set Apart July 11 Devotional

LEVITICUS 19:14 | 14 You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.
The physical perfection and order in the human and animal worlds reflected fitness for worship, as we have seen. Sacrifices had to be of unblemished goats or sheep or birds. Priests could have no deformities. This emphasis on normalcy and perfection, with its counterpoint of the rejection of the abnormal, differentiated the clean and unclean and reminded Israelites of their unique calling among the peoples. But it could lead to the denigration or dismissal of the value of those considered imperfect.
This possibility is countered in this verse. No one is to reject or revile those with disabilities. To do so is to fail to reflect God’s character and risk His judgement.
How does this apply to your life? Our life as a church?
Gracious God,
Prevent me from looking down at those who have different challenges than I do. Make me sensitive to the “differently abled.”
Amen.
