JOHN 19:26 | 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”
DEUTERONOMY 5:16 | 16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
There is a wonderful tenderness in Jesus’ words to His mother. Jesus affirmed the validity and divine authority of the Old Testament, even as He freely revised, expanded, and deepened it’s principles. He strove to honor His mother right to the very end of His life. With His nearly final breath He expressed concern for her well-being, recognized her deep sorrow and made a provision for her care.
No one can replace another person. Our relationships are unique, our memories of life unique, our feelings for others unique and personal. But caring for one another in loss is a hugely important obligation and opportunity. Jesus knew John was an ideal companion for Mary—they shared a deep understanding of His life and identity, and a great love for Him. Mary in her famous song, and with the angelic pronouncements, and John with his remarkable first chapter, offer some of the most profound perspectives on Jesus.
