Seven Last Words Daily Devotional -20

by David Joynt on March 08, 2021

MATTHEW 27:46| 46 And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

MATTHEW 3:17| 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

The cross included physical pain of an unimaginable kind. Spikes driven through nerve centers in hands and feet. Muscle spasms in the arms and legs and diaphragm from trying to breathe and support your own weight. A crown of thorns and eventually a spear thrust.

But perhaps the worst element for Jesus was the loss of connection with His Father. All throughout His life He had known a remarkable intimacy. He had stayed behind in the Temple. After a family trip and queried by His parents, He just said, “I was in my Father’s House!” At the baptism and transfiguration, a heavenly voice pronounced divine Son-ship and Fatherly delight: “This is my Son! With whom I am fully pleased.” Amid all the pressure, confrontation, demand, and opposition there was a constant sense of living in God’s presence. Now it was gone.

How constant is your sense of God’s presence?

How intimate is your relationship?
