MATTHEW 4:4 | 4 But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Psalm 22:1 | 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
With breath scarce, and every word a struggle, Jesus uses a scriptural reference as He calls out to God. He quotes the first half of the opening verse of Psalm 22. He was a person whose outlook and faith were shaped by scripture because “we live not by bread alone, but by every word comes from God’s mouth.” He lived by scripture and He died using it. There is a Psalm that expresses every human emotion, even abandonment and despair. Faith is courageous, brave enough to speak everything to God, with utter honesty.
Mark makes this quote Jesus’ only and final word from the cross. In it God enters into and shares our most agonizing question when we suffer, “Why?!”
How much is your life framed and shaped by scripture?
When have you asked “why?”
