Seven Last Words Daily Devotional -31

JOHN 19:28 (continued) | 28 After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said, “I am thirsty.”
PSALM 22:15 | 15my mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.
PSALM 69:21 | 21They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Jesus fulfilled scripture in so many ways and not just in the sense of exactly embodying previous predictions. He also filled scriptural ideas with new and deeper meaning. It is remarkable the way Psalm 22 parallels and seems to describe the suffering of our Lord on the cross. An earlier faithful sufferer turned His pain into prayer and poetry. Jesus appropriated this by quotation and then gave it a new sense as He suffered and died. Doubts about whether God is with us in our suffering are resolved. Fears of being abandoned can be countered with the real experience of a savior who was abandoned for others.
Why do the Gospel writers look for previews of Jesus’ life and death in the prophets and law of the Old Testament?
Do these parallels increase your sense of wonder?
