MATTHEW 6:21 | 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
A dear friend’s parents had frequent battles over money. His mother saw money as a means to achieve security and was insistent on clear budgeting, disciplined saving, and careful investment. His father saw money as a way to surprise, amuse, and please family and friends. He loved to purchase spontaneous gifts, take unplanned trips, and buy items that yielded no return on investment, like two dozen roses. Which parent had a true perspective on their resources? Both!
Money is a fungible asset. It can be used expressively or strategically, it can provide immediate pleasure or longer-term security. But notice that for both mom and dad, money was revelatory. Her vision for their resources revealed her desire to be free from financial pressure and her need to have enough money to meet future contingencies. His patterns revealed a desire to enjoy their finances now, lest they run out of time to use them later.
Jesus understood the way money reveals a great deal about our fears and hopes, as well as our values and desires. Where your treasure is, there you will find your heart!
What does your tax return reveal about your heart and attitude to money?
