MATTHEW 13:1-2, 9 | 1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2 Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach.
9 Let anyone with ears listen!”
There are neglected aspects to the famous parable of the sower. One is the nature of the sowing and what it says about the sower. We live in an age of “targeted marketing” where companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars profiling potential customers to enable them to sell to some and ignore others. Acquiring and marketing our “data” or preference profiles is the central business ploy of some of the world’s largest companies.
The Savior does not do targeted marketing! An agrarian audience would be shocked to hear of a farmer who tossed expensive seed onto the path, into the shallow soil, and amid the thorns. Yet as we see in our verses today Jesus preached and taught anyone who would listen. His was a gracious and generous approach. He did not screen by income, education, or influence—He gave everyone “with ears to hear” the benefit of His teaching, His wisdom, and also His presence.
How generous are you with your presence?
How widely do you see?
