The Other Jesus, Part 2, Week 3, Day 4
by David Joynt on July 18, 2018
MATTHEW 16:2-3 (CONTINUED)
He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
EPHESIANS 1:9-10
He has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
There are different words for time in the Bible. Chronos refers to time as duration. Kairos is the time of fulfillment, those moments where processes culminate, and God’s activity and blessing are visible. The period of planting, cultivation, germination, and growth is Chronos. The harvest is Kairos. The pregnancy is Chronos, and the birth is Kairos. Kairos is the time of fulfillment. With the birth of Jesus, Kairos has invaded Chronos. Promises and hopes found fulfillment, and Chronos itself was altered—divided into BC and AD. Jesus tells the Pharisees and Sadducees that they cannot tell Kairos time.
PRAYER
Gracious God, I don’t want to miss holy moments. I don’t want to ignore beautiful truths. I don’t want to overlook opportunities for love and service. Awaken my spirit to the Kairos moments around me. Show me how to participate in your fulfillment. I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
