The Other Jesus, Week 1, Day 2
by David Joynt on June 04, 2018
This summer we will be looking at many of Jesus’ “harder” sayings, the elements of his teaching which caused offense. Each of us must decide whether we will pick and choose the parts of his teaching we find reasonable and congenial, or whether we will trust him in a more comprehensive way, even when his instruction challenges our assumptions and our outlook. Peter expresses this second option well when he says: “To whom shall we go (for instruction)? You have the words of eternal life!” This choice, in turn, depends on the question of Jesus’ identity. If he is a gifted human teacher we should pick and choose among his teachings, as we would with any other prophet, or professor, or philosopher. If he is the Son of God, the one who has come down from heaven, then we must accept his unique authority, even when, and perhaps especially when, he instructs us in counter-cultural ways.
Have you made this fundamental choice?
