The Upside Down World, Week 6, Day 4
by David Joynt on October 18, 2017
The lawyer does not see the depth and comprehensiveness of the commands he has cited and so wants to “justify himself.” This probably means he wanted to show that his question was not just a Sunday School level inquiry but had graduate school complexities. After all, there were classic legal debates surrounding the breadth of this word “neighbor.” Scribes often took big wide commands and then limited them through specification to make them manageable. It could also be Jesus’ habit of treating disreputable people as friends and his unorthodox work with the despised and broken that led to this question. Surely some of the people Jesus was helping were not neighbors everyone was responsible for!
How do you cut God’s demands down to size?
How do you make smaller the circle of your responsibility?
How do you enlarge it?
FAMILY TIME—
Do you have a sense of responsibility for each other?
Do you have a sense of responsibility for anyone outside your family?
