DEUTERONOMY 5:21 | 21 “ ‘Neither shall you covet your neighbor’s wife. “ ‘Neither shall you desire your neighbor’s house, or field, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.’ ”

Material envy is a popular pastime! Following the lifestyles of the rich and famous is a cottage industry within the media and entertainment world. But envy of others’ relationships is also common.

Notice that in Deuteronomy’s version of the tenth commandment, we start with coveting another’s spouse. By implication, this sort of envy might be extended to someone’s parents, children, friends, business partners, etc. It might be motivated by sexual jealousy or by a desire to have relationships that are easier, or more exciting, or more glamorous, or more profitable, or even more spiritual than those we currently have.

Have you ever envied another’s relationships?

Gracious God,

It is tempting to want someone else’s life, rather than my own. Save me from this temptation.

Amen.
