EPHESIANS 4:25 | 25 So then, putting away falsehood, let each of you speak the truth with your neighbor, for we are members of one another.
MATTHEW 7:3-4 | 3 Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye but do not notice the log in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye?
The ninth commandment, read through Jesus’ command to love God and neighbor, has a positive implication: we should be devoted to truth and seek it out. The best way to avoid lying is to love the truth and earnestly try to find it and protect it. This great verse from Ephesians puts truth seeking into the context of community. Confrontations, done in love, advance truth and relationships because no one has a corner on reality. We need one another’s different perspectives and unique angles of vision to see the world more clearly.
Are you eager to seek truth with others?
Gracious God,
Help me to see others as partners in the pursuit of truth. Take away my fear of confrontation and any defensiveness in me.
Amen.
