GENESIS 21:1-3 |  1 The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised. 2Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him.

Honoring fathers and mothers does not mean slavishly following every inherited tradition and previous practice. Since the world and its institutions are imperfect, we also honor previous generations by improving things.

Children may be clueless about history, science, faith, and morals at birth, but this is an advantage as well as a disadvantage. They must on the one hand learn what is true and valuable from previous generations, or human life and knowledge will decline. But at the same time every new birth is hopeful. Each child brings new eyes to see things afresh, a new heart to grapple with mysteries, a new heart to feel compassion, and new hands to help, heal, and bless. The world is always in need of a new start. With every generation there is a fresh spirit! Every child is a child of promise as Isaac was.

How open are you to new insights from younger generations?

Gracious God,

Thank You for renewing the world by creating new boys and girls who become new men and women. Inspire them to solve issues, heal hurts, and build Your kingdom.

Amen.
