MATTHEW 5:21-22 | 21 You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder,’ and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire.”
The word “antithesis” refers to a contradicting or contrasting opinion or perspective, literally an anti-thesis, or “against view.” The word “epithesis” refers to an enhanced viewpoint, a perspective that is deepened or extended. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus uses the Ten Commands and deepens them, practicing epithesis. The injunction prohibiting murder is extended psychologically to include violent thoughts stemming from angry emotions, and verbally to include insults and degrading or dismissive comments. This is partly to prevent physical violence itself, which is rooted in anger and provoked further by confrontation that devalues someone. Zero tolerance for smaller offenses reduces larger ones.
How good are you at controlling your thoughts and words?
Gracious God,
Help me to have zero tolerance within myself. Drain the pools of anger and bitterness. Lift the fog of resentment. Let me feel the fresh wind of Your compassion.
Amen.
