DEUTERONOMY 5:19 | 19 Neither shall you steal.

All these forms of theft, which we have been discussing, have negative individual effects. They also have bad consequences communally. There are damaging social consequences when we disobey the eighth command.

Material thefts have driven retailers out of some U.S. cities, taking away jobs and choices from residents. Thefts of this kind are passed along as higher costs to consumers, because of what retailers will call “shrinkage.”

The psychological thefts, of hope, confidence, innocence, or dignity have spillover effects also on our communities, which lose the gifts and leadership individuals might have contributed to the general well-being.

Have you ever considered the social costs associated with disobeying the 8th command?

Gracious God,

Empower us to obey the eighth command so we may build up and bolster our common life.

Amen.
