EXODUS 3:6 | 6 He said further, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Human beings are inventive and creative. Invention and creativity are wonderful gifts of God. Each of us must write a new chapter with our lives in an ongoing story. But we must never forget there is an ongoing story. Novelists create new characters by the sheer power of imagination, but we do not invent ourselves in the same way. To think we do is to overemphasize the individual and to romanticize creativity. Even the novelist is part of traditions and deploys ideas inherited from her literary predecessors.

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as well as Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel shaped the story of Israel. The connections we have to spiritual pioneers are alive and significant, not mere footnotes in new tales we generate. Some current views of human identity assume biology and history are irrelevant and only will and imagination matter. No givens, only desires and possibilities.

Do you feel part of the great company of saints, martyrs, apostles, and servants?

Gracious God,

Thank You for the gifts of creativity and invention and for the givens of my biology and family story.

Amen.
