EXODUS 20:5b-6 | 5b punishing children for the iniquity of parents to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

God’s grace is in vast disproportion to His judgement. Punishment for sin extends 60 or so years, steadfast love for 20 millennia! Like a wise parent whose punishment is rooted in his love for his children, He disciplines and corrects His people so they can experience His blessing and favor through time and across generations.

Disobedience has consequences for children and adults, of course. God honors us by inviting us to choose to enter a covenant with Him and this choice is made real by knowledge that He determines its boundaries and terms for our ultimate good. Should we forsake the terms and ignore the boundaries we are generating for our own unfortunate consequences? God is jealous for us and when we live outside His will we take paths that lead to difficulty and death.

Look back at this week. Is God’s jealousy good and healthy?

Gracious God,

Your grace is amazing! Thank You for warning us of consequences and encouraging us onto paths that preserve life.

Amen.
