MATTHEW 7:7-11 | Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asked for bread, would give a stone? 10 Or if the child asked for a fish, would give a snake? 11 If you, then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Beneath every prohibition in the Ten Commandments lies an affirmation. The reason we avoid misuse of God’s name is to ensure we use it rightly. We use His name well when we appeal for His aid, ask for His wisdom, and seek His help. Jesus teaches that God delights in meeting our needs and answering these prayers. Similarly, we use God’s name well when we intercede for others, bringing their concerns, needs, issues, and challenges before God.

How often do you intercede for others or appeal for God’s aid?

Gracious God,

You are a good, good Father who knows how to bless and equip us. Teach us how to ask, for ourselves and others.

Amen.
