DEUTERONOMY 5:6 | 6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;
Human beings need liberation from many kinds of oppression. The Israelites were rescued from captivity, from control of their labor and movement, from permanent status as human tools, from legal and social inferiority, from political repression which prohibited speech, expression, and organization. Slavery was dehumanizing, ruining health, shortening lives, thwarting possibilities and dignity, and potential. It was unfreedom.
Human beings need liberation for self-determination, political expression, vocational choice, social and educational development, and religious practice. In the Exodus, God puts Himself firmly on the side of political, social, economic, and personal freedoms and against authoritarianism and exploitation.
What “unfreedoms” have you experienced?
Gracious God,
Today we pray for everyone experiencing oppression in our world, all who are degraded and exploited. Help us work for laws and societies that respect human rights which are rooted in dignity and in Your creative power and holy will.
Amen.
