DEUTERONOMY 5:15 | 15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
The Reformed tradition in theology has a deep appreciation for the sovereignty of God. When it comes to the Sabbath, this means that we can rest because God is in control of history. We all have vital roles to play, no doubt, in the drama of salvation and the building of the Kingdom, but when we are offline, God is still working. Everything does not depend on us. Just as Israel did not engineer its own release from Egypt, God acted to move the Pharaoh and then defeat his army. We too can cease and desist from work, trusting that His mighty hand is active, guiding the human story toward a culmination.
Do you ever live under pressure as if everything depended on you alone?
Gracious God,
Give me a healthy sense of responsibility in which I value my calling and work, while trusting that You are sovereign in my life and in history. Amen.
