HEBREWS 12:2 | looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Many of the best workers are perfectionists—or as my dad called them “100%’ers.” They strive always to do their absolute best, they have very high expectations of their own productivity, and they achieve a lot. But they are often plagued by anxiety. They worry over looming deadlines. They feel burdened by final results. They have a nagging sense they haven’t done enough or been enough and they should have done and been better.

This verse is for them in particular. Jesus is our pioneer and perfecter. He precedes us in every way and in every situation as our pioneer, creating the conditions and capacities for our                         contributions. Inevitably, especially when we take on big jobs or hard problems, our work will feel incomplete. But He is also the perfecter, coming along afterward and using our efforts for greater purposes. We can be faithful but not perfect because He is both.

Are you a perfectionist?

Gracious God,

Give me confidence that You precede and follow me, making my work possible in advance and complete eventually.

Amen.
