DEUTERONOMY 5:1-3 | 1Moses convened all Israel and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I am addressing to you today; you shall learn them and observe them diligently. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 Not with our ancestors did the Lord make this covenant but with us, who are all of us here alive today.
All of these observations about the character of freedom must be set within the context of the renewable covenant. The law is not just a once and done legal framework of obligation; it contains a vision of the common good and the holy life, to be pursued together in families and communities. It must be renewed, as Moses insists in Deuteronomy five, because life is generational and individual. We must choose to opt in, to participate, to live and teach the codes and values, to defend the principles. The Ten Commandments are true independently of any of our choices, but they are not real for us unless we choose to follow and treasure them.
Do you treasure God’s commands?
Gracious God,
I am opting in! Help me live and treasure Your commands—they are the words of life.
Amen.
