Tough Questions for Christians March 16 Devotional

by David Joynt on March 16, 2023

JOHN 14:6 | Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jesus made clear claims to be divine and uniquely able to reveal the nature of God. Do these claims require us as His followers to disavow the validity of everything in every religion? I don’t believe so. God is active and present everywhere and in the life of every person. He works to reveal His will and work through many systems of thought and Christianity has deepened its own traditions and thinking by engaging with philosophies like Platonism and Aristotelianism, with science, and with other religions.

But when Jesus says, “no one comes to the Father except through me!” I believe His statement is absolutely true in a historical sense. The Father He reveals is not portrayed or described in the same way anywhere else. A Father, as in Luke 15, who bears humiliation, a Father who suffers to redeem, a Father who offers grace to the undeserving. The Father He reveals in His life, death, resurrection, and teaching is undeniably unique. To come to that Father, you can only come through Him.

How do you view other religions?

Gracious God,

Thank You for revealing Your heart in the person of Your Son. Never let familiarity dull my sense of surprise at Your willingness to save and redeem Your broken children.

Amen.
