Tough Questions for Christians March 19 Devotional

by David Joynt on March 19, 2023

PSALM 14:1 | 1 Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; they do abominable deeds; there is no one who does good.

The new atheists, like Steven Pinker, Richard Dawkins, and Alex Rosenberg think science is a vindication of their atheism and a death blow to the Christian faith. Yet there are great weaknesses in their arguments.

One difficult fact has to do with the origins of science itself. The empirical foundations of the modern scientific method were laid by two Franciscan brothers, Roger Bacon and William of Ockham, both strong believers. Robert Boyle was another key early science figure and devout disciple. Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, and James Clerk Maxwell were foundational scientists, believers in God, and three of the greatest physicists of all time. Maxwell developed the second great unification of physics, connecting electricity, magnetism, and light and he was an evangelical Presbyterian and an elder in his “kirk” in Scotland! Lord Kelvin (the Kelvin unit of temperature) who first calculated the age of the earth is another example. The Catholic Priest, George Lemaitre, was first to propose the big bang theory.

Do you know any Christian scientists?

Gracious God,

Help me to bring faith and reason together. May my reason be faithful and my faith reasonable.

Amen.
