Tough Questions for Christians March 20 Devotional

JOHN 1:1-3 | 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.

It is an undeniable fact that many great scientists of the past and present do not see any conflict between their faith and the scientific enterprise. In fact, they insist their science serves God and reinforces their beliefs. Historians of science have long tried to explain the genesis of the enterprise. Why did science arise in the West, since there were other non-Western societies, like China, with advanced technologies where it did not develop?

Princeton professor Hans Alvorson, sees a direct link between Christian convictions and the rise of science. Early scientists believed the universe worked by rational laws because God the creator, was rational. They searched for natural causes and developed empirical methods of investigation because of, not despite their theological beliefs. God was free in a unique way to create however He chose to, but He decided to employ natural process and laws, discoverable by human beings endowed by Him with reason. In John chapter one, Jesus is the rational order and creator of all things.

What were you taught about the origins of science?

Gracious God,

Thank You for the gift of reason. Let me exercise it well and truly as I seek wisdom in a world of information and deception.

Amen.
