Tough Questions for Christians March 22 Devotional

by David Joynt on March 22, 2023

PSALM 8:3-5 | 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are humans that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.

Scientists can’t exclude supernatural causes as part of their method and then trumpet the exclusion as proof for their atheism! Science ignores “why” questions deliberately in order to answer “how” questions. But that doesn’t make the why questions, questions of purpose, irrelevant, or irrational. Why is there a universe at all? Why are we in it?

In fact, atheism has struggled as a worldview because it can’t answer these questions of purpose and ethics in supportable ways. Atheism is highly compatible with nihilism—the belief that life has no       meaning. You and I are a bag of cells with an unknown expiration date. The earth is a rock hurtling through space. If all we have is an origin story from physics and a tale of evolutionary development, it is hard to see how we have grounds for believing in human equality, equal treatment, or protection of the vulnerable.

Notice how the Psalmist grounds human dignity in the purposes of God.

Gracious God,

Thank You for creating us in Your image, for granting us liberty and life and for seeking and saving us in our lostness and rebellion. Our life and our hope is in You and not ourselves.

Amen.
