Tough Questions for Christians March 23 Devotional

by David Joynt on March 23, 2023

Genesis 1:1-3 | 1 When God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

At the beginning of the 20th century, physicists began to insist the universe had a beginning. This was quite disturbing to atheists and compatible with the idea of a creator and the narrative described in scripture and tradition. Over the last 100 years, another striking feature has emerged. The emergence of cosmological constants that are extremely precise raises the questions about what some call the “anthropic principle.” The universe is very minutely fine-tuned to produce life. Any tiny difference in these constants would make life impossible. This fine tuning is extremely unlikely by chance. Even more powerfully, all of these constants had to emerge immediately in the earliest phase of the universe’s birth. We can’t just leap from the existence of order to a designer, but the necessary character, scale, and precise nature of the order is suggestive.

Do you marvel at the creation?

Gracious God,

Let me never take life for granted! How marvelous is the universe and how vast in scale! How mysterious and beautiful are the heavens and the earth. How gracious You are to create us and allow us to explore and understand the cosmos!

Amen.
