JOSHUA 5:13-15 | Once when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing before him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, "Are you one of us, or one of our adversaries?" He replied, "Neither; but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and he said to him, "What do you command your servant, my lord?" The commander of the army of the Lord said to Joshua, "Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy." And Joshua did so.
Our culture values independence—the capacity to survive and thrive without depending on the aid of others. But some battles should not be fought alone. Some challenges cannot be met without assistance.
Before the confrontation with the city of Jericho, Joshua had an encounter with the “Commander” of the army of the Lord. “He was allowed a vision of the supernatural support that the Israelites had in their battles.
When we face addiction we do not do so alone. When we face depression or anxiety we are not by ourselves. When vocations run aground or relationships are on the rocks, we must not forget the invisible team that stands with us. And we must also be willing to be helped by friends, neighbors, family, and our faith community.
How independent are you?
When has it helped you?
When has it hurt you?
