GENESIS 17:8, 15-17 | 8 And I will give to you, and to your offspring after you, the land where you are now an alien, all the land of Canaan, for a perpetual holding; and I will be their God.”
15 God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
Now Abraham was asked to trust his life and fortunes to a promise beyond his comprehension, that seemed unlikely. When he did so, notice the impact. Geography and history actually did change. The story of Judaism, its history and influence, began to take shape. There were ancestors and there was a land of promise. Four millennia later there has been a worldwide impact stemming from a single family.
Yet Abraham’s choice to live out the promise was more than one moment of insight. He had doubts. He was skeptical and felt the farcical and comic aspects of his own calling. The covenant was offered and announced multiple times. Sarah’s reluctance had to be overcome. Heroic faith has its ups and downs!
Has your trust in God’s promises waxed and waned?
Do you believe God can use you to bless future generations?
